“Play!” offers a fresh look and sound of the playfulness of children. Throughout the show numerous children’s songs are interwoven into the musical fabric, engaging the audience to seek out songs they know and recognize. Songs include “Farmer in the Dell”, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”, and “Rain, Rain Go Away” in which a low brass soloist is prominently featured. “Hopscotch” contains sound effects and repetitive musical figures. The ballad of “Flying Kites” features breezy, lyrical music to depict a lazy day, perfect for flying kites. The grand finale, “Young at Heart,” brings back the high energy of the opening production and features the drum section, allowing the band to play some children’s games. “Three Blind Mice” and “Twinkle” are two of the songs included as the show leads to a recap of the opening and cheerful finale. Mixed meters and some complex rhythms could be a challenge for less-experienced performers. “With this cheerful and upbeat composition, you are never too old to “Play!” You can check out the mp3s and sheet music by going to the band website under the Marching Band tab.
