Kimberlie Richter, NYSO Co-Music Director, is enjoying the start of the Naperville Youth Symphony Orchestra season. Mrs. Richter has been living music for over thirty years. She was accepted to the Chicago Youth Symphony under the direction of Dudley Powers and into the Civic Orchestra of Chicago at the age of sixteen. Richter went on to study and receive a B.A. in Music Education from Northwestern University during which time she studied bassoon with Willard Elliot and Wilbur Simpson both of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conducting with Dale J. Lonis and Dr. John P. Paynter.
Teaching, coaching and conducting have always been a first love of Mrs. Richter. Her private studio boasts professional performers both local and international and she has graduated music performance students from her studio to colleges such as The Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, Northwestern University, DePaul University, Western Illinois University, Indiana University and the University of Illinois. Students from Richter's studio were featured performing the 3rd movement of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto in Bb, K.191 for the 1986 Midwest Band Festival in Chicago. Ms. Richter has had the fortune of being under and learning from great conductors such as Sir George Solti, Stephen Altop, Meng-Kong Tham, Gordon Peters, Margene Pappas, Alfred Reed, Harry Begian, Frederick Ockwell and Dale Clevenger. Richter was the featured guest conductor in 2006 with the Saitama-Sakae Wind Orchestra. Mrs. Richter has a passion for exposing young musicians to classic standards and to new music by up and coming composers. The 2014 YSDP Concert Orchestra, conducted by Richter, premiered the performance of “The Current”by Justin Koszarek. This piece was commissioned specifically by Richter for the YSDP Concert Orchestra to highlight the level of players within the orchestra and to give them an American contemporary music experience. In continuing their exposure to contemporary music, the 2015 Concert Orchestra performed current Eastman School ofMusic composition and performance major Tyler Selvig’s composition “The Thief”. In keeping with providing diverse and progressive music experiences, Mrs. Richter developed the Music Extravaganza Festival which has hosted over 500 young musicians from the Chicagoland area in a performance and progressive teaching venue. Ms. Richter is currently the Applied Faculty Coordinator and an Adjunct Professor of Music at North Central College where she has grown the bassoon studio for seventeen years. Ms. Richter is a highly respected pedagogic in bassoon technique and collegiate performance preparation; she enjoys teaching and growing the young musicians of today into the artists of tomorrow. |
