Oboes and Bassoons
Every player should have at least two working reeds at all times. That way if/when one breaks, they have a spare. If they don't have one, they have to sit out and just finger along until they get another one, which isn't good for anyone.
Students who are in high school should also upgrade to a real reed case. These help keep the reeds in good shape and formed to a mold, and helps the reeds last longer because of the humidity controls. The clear plastic tubes, don't offer any support from breaking, take longer to warm up, and can get moldy easily because the reeds get put away wet and just fester in there. Reed cases, while being more expensive, save lots of money in the long run because of the protection they offer and the longevity they add to the reeds themselves.
