2021-2022 Jazz Auditions
We are thrilled that this year, jazz will get back to normal again at OHS. The last few years have been the most successful in our program's history, with an All-State performance, Grand Champions of the North Shore JazzFest, playing the Jazz Showcase, and three Downbeat Magazine Outstanding Performance Awards to name a few accolades.
We are going to have auditions as well to get students in a band that best gels with their ability level. No one gets cut, with the possible exception of if we have too many drummers. These auditions will be done virtually, with students submitting a video on the Jazz Auditions Google Classroom page. (access code is 475awhv)
The auditions will include a few parts, tiered for the band level you desire, with all material found on the Google Classroom page. All measure numbers are there as well.
1) Students only interested in our Jazz 3 will play a short improvised solo and the melody to the song "In Walked Horace".
2) Students interested in our Jazz 2 will still play a short solo, but replace the Jazz 3 song with small chunks from "S if for Silent" and "Foo Birds of a Feather". You will play off the first part for your instrument (if applicable). Click on the PDF and scroll down to your instrument and print that one off.
There is a reference recording at the bottom of this page. Use it, but only go as fast as YOU can. Play with a metronome on your recording, set at a comfortable speed for you.
3) Students interested in our Jazz 1 will add "Great Love" to their audition.
2) Everyone solos over the F blues...you will play 2 choruses with an accompaniment track. Rhythm section (bass/piano/guitar/vibes): you will be expected to comp or walk a bassline over the 12 measure form. Drummers, you will trade 4s (play time for four measures, solo for four measures) for two choruses. Click on the PDF and scroll down to your instrument and print that one off. Make sure the recording is audible on your submission video, and stop it after your second full chorus.
3) For the drummers auditioning for Jazz 1, you have a special etude to play, with many of the styles, fills, etc. that you will be expected to play.
Below, you can download and print off the parts you need for your audition. There are also recordings of the songs, and a play-along for the improvisation. For the mp3s, you can right click and save them to your computer, and then play it from there, your IPod, IPhone, IPad, etc.
Enjoy, and good luck!!!
