2021-2022 Jazz Auditions
Like everything else, this year's jazz auditions will look different. The last few years have been the most successful in our program's history, with an All-State performance, Grand Champions of the North Shore JazzFest, playing the Jazz Showcase, and a Downbeat Magazine Outstanding Performance Award to name a few accolades.
These are unusual times, but we want to keep our momentum going as best we can. So, we are moving forward with our jazz season. We are going to have auditions as well to get students in a band that best gels with their ability level. No one gets cut, with the possible exception of if we have too many drummers. These auditions will be done virtually, with students submitting a video on the Jazz Auditions Google Classroom page. (access code is 2xq4jpg) The things to include in your audition are below,,students who are interested in being a part of the top jazz band have one extra thing to include.
Important Dates
Tuesday 9/15, 3:00-4:00 Jazz Workshop. We will go over all the material and how to be successful submitting your audition.
Wednesday, 9/23: Audition videos are due by 3:00PM. Make sure you get it done early in case you have uploading problems.
The auditions will include a few parts:
1) The IMEA song for this year, "S if for Silent". You will play off the first part for your instrument (if applicable). Click on the PDF and scroll down to your instrument and print that one off. Play the following section(s):
Alto/Tenor/Bari: 17-42 (skip rests), 176-203
Trumpet: 50-67, 183-201
Trombone: 50-67, 168-192
Bass: 168-end
Vibes: 9-29 (play cues), 183-201
Guitar: 17-42, 176-192
Piano: 25-42,183-202
Drums: 1-16, 192-219
There is a reference recording at the bottom of this page. Use it, but only go as fast as YOU can. Play with a metronome on your recording, set at a comfortable speed for you.
2) Solo over the F blues...you will play 2 choruses with an accompaniment track. Rhythm section (bass/piano/guitar/vibes): you will be expected to comp or walk a bassline over the 12 measure form. Click on the PDF and scroll down to your instrument and print that one off. Make sure the recording is audible on your submission video, and stop it after your second full chorus.
3) For those students that are interested in trying out for the top jazz ensemble, you will play the Jim Snidero etude "Friends". Click on the PDF and scroll down to your instrument and print that one off. There is a reference recording that you should play along with. You only need to play the first chorus.
4) For the drummers, you have a special etude to play, with many of the styles, fills, etc. that you will be expected to play. You will also trade 4's with yourself, which means you will alternate playing in a swing style for four measures, and soloing for 4 measures.
Below, you can download and print off the parts you need for your audition. There are also recordings of the songs, and a play-along for the improvisation. For the mp3s, you can right click and save them to your computer, and then play it from there, your IPod, IPhone, IPad, etc.
Enjoy, and good luck!!!
