Over the weekend, the Jazz Ensemble 1 played at the Evanston Jazz Festival. They took the mainstage in the late morning and played three selections that they will be playing again in a few weeks at JazzNite. The Combo 1 also played at the Little Theater, gaining insights into what makes a great improviser. Highlights were the noon performance by Mark Colby, who will be our guest artist March 10th, and a masterclass by sax great Donny McCaslin, who was the bandleader for David Bowie's last record before he died. Several soloists were recognized as being Outstanding Soloists. In the combo room, trombonist Nick Wilkins was chosen. In the auditorium, tenor sax player Elizabeth Sester, pianist Evah Engel, trombonist Jerrell Rogers, were chosen, and guitarist Danny Anderson was chosen by both judges.
